DUDMAN concrete mixer truck

The Death of Bunny Munro

The DUDMAN concrete mixer truck is a maroon vehicle whose two appearances turn a strange roadside detail into a force that changes the course of the journey. Its rapidly moving wipers recur across both scenes: first in dry weather, then amid a storm, as the truck bears down on the Yellow Fiat Punto.

First Appearance

The truck is stopped in a lay-by while a tattooed man changes its rear tire. The word DUDMAN is painted in giant cream letters across the bonnet. Although it is not raining, the wipers move back and forth at great speed; Bunny Junior notices them with a jolt of panic. The incongruity makes the truck more than passing traffic: it is an unsettling image that stays in the narrative before its significance becomes clear.

Collision

Later, in the rain, the maroon truck veers into oncoming traffic. Its barrel is rolling and its wipers lash across the windscreen. Bunny sees a tattooed arm hanging limp from the window, recalling the earlier roadside encounter, before the truck accelerates and collides with the Yellow Fiat Punto. The vehicle’s movement converts the earlier unease into an immediate, consequential event.

Aftermath and Significance

After the collision, Bunny awakens disoriented and sees the yellow car twisted around the maroon mixer. He holds a child’s encyclopedia and, looking at the wreck, sees a boy’s face in his mind. The truck therefore remains central even in the scene’s confused aftermath: its collision is the circumstance surrounding Bunny’s altered awareness and his recollection of the child. Its recurring, conspicuous wipers bind the two appearances together, carrying the narrative from ominous observation to catastrophe.
